In the left-hand column on your userpage, under "my user account," click on "my settings" and use the option at the bottom that says "Avatar." Click on Choose, find the file on your hard drive, and click Update. Your icon needs to be a GIF file that is 50 X 50 pixels in dimension, and the file needs to be less than 12k in size.
